"The funeral took place yesterday of Amble's oldest inhabitant, Mr Thomas Darling, who died after a prolonged illness at his residence Percy Street, Amble. Mr Darling who was 95 years old, was born at Craster in the year 1837, where he served his apprenticeship as a shoemaker. After coming to the town he held the position of manager of the Amble Co-operative Society Shoemaking Department for more than 30 years. He was a life-long member of the Amble Congregational Church, and was a direct descendant of the Grace Darling family. The service in the Congregational Church was conducted by Rev C. M. Liddle, who also said he commital prayers at the West Cemetery. The chief mourners were : Mrs Taylor (daughter), Mrs W Gibson (granddaughter), Mr W Gibson, Mr P Gibson and Mr J Gibson (grandsons), Mrs A Turnbull (niece), Mr R C Roland, and Mrs E Linton. Other present included : Mr Andrew Sanderson, Mr C Sanderson, Mr F Murrie, Mr J Winter, Mr G Penrose, Mr J Weddle, Mr J Archbold, Mr A Cram, Mr T Hook, Mr R Oliver, Mr A Roper, Mrs Y Sanderson. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs J Rutherford and Son, Amble." | ||||
